Minneapolis Music Scene 2003, in a Nutshell

While talking to the editor of a forthcoming local music mag, I was asked to describe my taste in music in terms of local bands. I kind of like my reply:

Hoo boy. I like a pretty broad range of stuff for someone who grew up in the middle
of nowhere in Nebraska. My favorite local band would be my own, Grumpy Alice (yes,
the name annoys me sometimes, too, but the band is good)- guitarish pop with lots of weird keyboard noises. I like the Umbrella Sequence for their more refined combination
of guitar and keyboard noises. I like the Mammy Nuns for their back-to-basics country-rock. Ditto Bellwether. I like Ear Candy for being two weird women with keyboards. I
like Thoughtcloud for their non-nonsense rock background. I like the Lonesome Dan
Case one-man-with-the-acoustic-blues approach, since he does it without verging
into Jim Belushiesque fake blues pathology. I like pretty much all of the bluegrass
acts that play Dulono's Pizza on Lake, despite the fact that they're really playing
B- bluegrass at best. At least they're trying.

My Moderately Triumphant Return to Non-Music Journalism

The National Novel Writing Month article is out, in this month's Rake.
