Wow

Fascinating New Yorker article about World War I; I especially like the analysis of how the two biggest wars of the last century teach apparently contradictory lessons:

World War 1: Compromise is probably better than killing off an entire continent in a pointless war.

World War 2: If you keep compromising, you're just making the eventual, inevitable fight worse.

I read that same article. It was illuminating. I'm not sure I'll ever get to the books reviewed there, though. Ever read Barbara Tuchman? She is mentioned in the article. Her Guns of August will fry your brain.
