Wow

Fascinating New Yorker article about World War I; I especially like the analysis of how the two biggest wars of the last century teach apparently contradictory lessons:

World War 1: Compromise is probably better than killing off an entire continent in a pointless war.

World War 2: If you keep compromising, you're just making the eventual, inevitable fight worse.

Anthologized and Singled Out

Showing an amazing amount of ongoing life for something I thought of while waiting for a traffic light on my bike, the Journal of a New COBRA Recruit is in yet another anthology, McSweeney's Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans. And I agree completely with the Amazon reviewer who says that the story will make no sense if you didn't grow up with G. I. Joe in the 80s (actually, I've always gotten a big kick out of seeing people try to make sense of it without the G. I. Joe context; it usually comes down to calling me an anti-Army America-hater).
